Frederick J. Mulhaupt (1871-1938)

Frederick J. Mulhaupt was born in Rockport, MO, in 1871. He studied at the Art Academy, Kansas City, MO, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Paris. He was a founding member of the Palette and Chisel Club in 1895. He was an instructor of the figure at Art Institute of Chicago in 1902 and 1904. Subsequently he took up residence at New York's Salmagundi Club.

Mulhaupt lived in New York during the winter and began to visit Gloucester MA in the summer. In 1922 he moved there. His talents blossomed in Gloucester. He became a founding member of North Shore Arts Association and exhibited every year from 1923 to 1938. Mulhaupt's signature works are those that depict the working harbor of Gloucester.

Sandy Lepore, regarded by many as an expert on Mulhaupt, has over her twenty six years as a dealer placed many pictures executed by Frederick Mulhaupt; and one can usually find examples in her present inventory. In addition to Frederick Mulhaupt, Lepore Fine Arts specializes in artists painting between 1850 and 1950 with a focus on artists who painted in New England during this period.
